Simple Haircare Tips to Maintain Shine this Summer

Summer adds natural highlights to your hair, but without proper care, it can also make it dry, brittle, faded, lusterless, and hard to manage.

Regular maintenance is the best advice, but it’s never too late to repair your hair and prevent further damage.

Here are the basics anyone should follow:

1. Wear a hat, a scarf, a kerchief, anything that will reduce the amount of UV light your hair gets subjected to while you’re out in the sun.

2. Lower the temperature of your shower and styling tools.

3. Use a sulfate-free gentle shampoo, and wash hair less often (twice a week ideally).

4. In the shower, after applying conditioner, use a wide-toothed comb to distribute product evenly and detangle without damaging your hair.

5. After you shower, use a serum on your ends while your hair is still damp to prevent split ends.

6. Apply a mask/serum on your scalp once a week. Scalp health is critical to hair health.

7. Use our Elixir Hair Serum.

When I formulated our Elixir Hair Serum, I was inspired by an all-natural botanical French hair & scalp serum I loved as a teen. I created Rêves de Sabine’s own version by combining the highest quality nourishing organic oils with a blend of carefully selected therapeutic essential oils. Elixir Hair Serum cleanses and nourishes the scalp, helps strengthen and protect the hair shaft, prevent split ends, encouraging hair growth.

The perfect blend of essential oils for hair health:

- Rosemary
- Lavender
- Lemongrass
- Basil
- Geranium
- Peppermint
- Bergamot

These essential oils help cleanse the scalp, increase circulation, and stimulate hair growth.

Outstanding carrier oils for a healthy scalp and shiny hair:

Carrier oils are also an essential component of my formulation. They were intentionally combined to cleanse, nourish and balance the scalp, to condition and protect the hair, and to provide the perfect consistency, blend of vitamins, fatty acids, antioxidants etc…always using the cold-pressed, unrefined, organic versions:

TamanuToo.jpg

Tamanu (used by Tahitian women) by itself could be a bit too thick, especially for fine hair. But it is such an incredible hair beautifying oil. It is soothing, healing, and anti inflammatory.

Watermelon seed oil (a.k.a. Ootanga or Kalahari oil, originally from South Africa), on the other hand, is very fluid and absorbs well into the hair. It improves hair elasticity and does not clog pores.

Camellia Japonica.jpg

Camellia oil (a.k.a. Tsubaki oil), which has been used by Japanese women for many centuries, is also easily absorbed, prevents dry, itchy scalp, softens hair and adds luster.

Argan Oil.jpg

Argan oil, a superb moisturizer used by Moroccan women since ancient times, balances the scalp, and protects from the drying effects of the sun.

The best scalp-massaging and hair-detangling tool:

Massaging the scalp is a great way to improve scalp and hair health. You can use your fingertips and gently go in circles all over your scalp. Do this daily, if possible.

My favorite scalp massaging/hair detangling tool is the wide-toothed green sandalwood comb. It is antistatic, does not break the hair, helps tame frizz, as it distributes oils evenly along the hair from the roots to the ends. It gets better with age, and is perfect for detangling hair in the summer.

Use it after applying a few drops of Elixir Hair Serum on the scalp. First massage your scalp with your fingertips, then use the comb to gently detangle the hair and stimulate the scalp without bruising or scraping the skin. The wood feels great too, as it increases blood circulation and healthy oil production.
